A black villa on its own stretch of river at Raiskio, outside Ranua — no neighbours, an hour south of Rovaniemi airport, and far enough from any town that the sky stays dark. It is 120 square metres for up to eight: three bedrooms and a loft, a fireplace facing the water, a sauna, and a hot tub sitting inside a glass room so you can lie in it and watch the aurora over the river without getting out. The family behind it, Wikkelä, also run a handful of apartments in Rovaniemi and arrange the rest of the trip — aurora nights, huskies, the polar bears at Ranua Zoo, and a private Santa who does not share you with a queue.

What is inside
- Three bedrooms and a loft, up to eight people. Two separate toilets and a bathroom, so a full house is not queueing.
- A living room with a fireplace and panoramic windows straight onto the river.
- A sauna, and an outdoor hot tub inside a glass room — the reason to come in winter. You get the sky without the wind.
- A glassed-in terrace with heaters and a good gas grill, usable in the cold.
- A full kitchen with Finnish-design tableware, a large TV and free wi-fi.
- Built in 2019, in a spot with no neighbours in sight.
A private Santa, not a queue
This is the part worth knowing about if you are travelling with children. Rather than the crowds at Rovaniemi, they run a private meeting with Santa at his hideaway on a lake near Ranua — your family, on your own, for as long as it takes. Three versions: a private meeting, lunch with Santa, or dinner with Santa. Indicative starting prices at the time of writing were around €70, €120 and €214, with transport arranged if you need it — roughly €90 within Ranua or €380 from Rovaniemi for up to four people. Confirm all of it when you write; these are their published from-prices, not a quote.
What else they arrange
- Ranua Zoo, 18 km away — polar bears, lynx, wolverines and about fifty other Arctic species. One of the few places in the world you will see a polar bear this far into the wild north.
- Northern lights nights, husky and reindeer farms, snowmobile safaris, ice fishing and icebreaker cruises — booked through them rather than by you, one contact for the whole week.
- Summer, which people forget Ranua has: hiking, canoeing and berry-picking in the forest around the villa.
- Meals. Private dinners, lunches and afternoon tea cooked for you at the villa if you would rather not shop and cook.
- Transfers between Rovaniemi and Ranua, and apartments in Rovaniemi itself if you want a night in town at either end of the trip.
Worth knowing before you write
- Ranua is the quiet alternative to Rovaniemi. An hour from the airport, almost no light pollution, and none of the Santa Village crowds. That is the trade: darker skies and more privacy, further from the restaurants. Our Northern Lights page covers the season.
- You will want a car, or their transfers. There is nothing within walking distance, which is rather the point. See our car and campervan rental page.
- Kosher and Shabbat. A private villa with a full kitchen puts you in control, and they will also cook for you if you brief them. We have not confirmed what they can accommodate — ask directly, and ask early if you need the Santa or activity timings to work around Friday night.
- Eight is the number. Priced per stay for the whole villa, so it works best filled — a family, or two families together.
- English, Finnish and Chinese. No Hebrew — write in English and you will be fine.
- December books out first. If Santa is the reason you are going, treat the dates as the thing to lock in before anything else.
